~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Angel of Death passed over the Banning High School Class of 1974 for the 18th time on Tuesday, December 11.
I don't know a whole lot of people, especially in our class, who called Vincent Silvas by his yearbook nickname, "Slim." Most everyone I know called him Vincent or Vince (just for the record, I always called him "Vince"). The one thing he never was, was slim: he was about 5'11" and tipped the Toledos at about 225.
What many of us do remember, sadly, is the day he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle. It didn't kill him right then and there, but he suffered with the after-effects ever since.
The official cause of his death Tuesday at 12:20 p.m. PST is complications from a massive stroke and a cerebral hemmorage, but those of us who know Vince well know that it was a driver's careless act on a Banning street over 30 years ago that eventually killed him. Anyway, enough said; I really don't want to go off on a tangent.
Vince was born February 4, 1956, the oldest son of Ben and Angie Silvas, and, as I noted before, left this world Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the age of 51.
His parents preceded him in death ... Ben in 1977, and Angie in 1981, the victim of a homicide.
Despite the accident that almost claimed him, Vince did survive to graduate with us from BHS on June 14, 1974.
On Dec. 30, 1981, Vince married the former Rita Snow, who survives, and the two had four children: C.J., Benjamin, Gabriel, and Rachel.
Also surviving Vince are his sisters, Rebecca, the youngest, who lives in Idaho, and the twins, Ruth (Torrance, CA) and Rita (Yucaipa), as well as numerous nieces and nephews ... as well as his cousin, Gwen Silvas Woodward of San Jacinto.
It was Vincent's choice that he be cremated. A memorial service at the Banning/Beaumont LDS Church has been scheduled for Thurs., Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. Pacific Time at the Banning/Beaumont LDS Church.
Vince, you're not in pain anymore. Rest in peace, my brother. Rest in peace.
POST SCRIPT: On October 22, Glen Macias died in Banning of unknown causes at the age of 51, the 17th member of our class to pass.
Glen is survived by his daughter Tirzah, his mother Margaret Macias, brothers Allen, Gary and Mark, his sister Veronica Rogers, eight nieces and two nephews.
His graveside service was held October 29 at San Gorgonio Pass Memorial Park.
A FINAL THOUGHT ... After giving a considerable amount of thought to the subject -- since the cause is near and dear to my heart -- I have chosen to keep the link to the Breast Cancer Site below, and will hope that all who come to this website will join me in supporting the war against this terrible disease.
The corporate sponsors and advertisers of this website use the number of daily visits to this site to donate a mammogram free of charge to an underpriviledged woman.
This won't cost you anything more than a minute of your time. Once you reach the website, click on the pink window in the middle of the page that reads "Donate a mammogram" to help fund this cause.
Just go to: http://thebreastcancersite.com. Do it for the women in your life.
Thank you.
