"Where were you when … ?"
You've probably either heard that question asked of someone, or you've been asked that query yourself. And it's usually tied to some historical event:
"… when Jack Kennedy was shot?"
"… when man landed on the Moon?"
"… when Elvis died?"
"… when the Berlin Wall came down?"
Where were you when Tony Prior died?
It has been almost 20 years since we lost Tony, and to this day I cannot believe that he is gone. He was always so graceful, so gifted as an athlete could be. He could run like the wind, leap unfathomable distances for a high school track star, carry a football or shoot a basketball. He could do it all.
Where was I when Tony Prior died? I was working as the Sports Director for KPSA Radio in Alamogordo, New Mexico, calling the play-by-play of an American Legion baseball game on July 21, 1984.
The rest of you from the Class of '74 were likely at the 10-Year Reunion. Tony was en route to the reunion when he swerved to avoid a rear-end collision after being cut off in traffic and was crushed to death in his truck.
He will be 28 forever.
